FREDERICK, MD - Police in Frederick are continuing to put together the pieces of a large brawl in broad daylight.

Frederick City Police responded to the 400 block of West South Street around 5:30 p.m. Monday.

About 15 to 20 people were involved in a fight, which led to a stabbing and shots being fired.

"We began to set up a perimeter to try to identify those people leaving, so it was very chaotic in the beginning, but I would describe it as controlled chaos because the officers are well trained. They understand how to respond to these things and try to identify individuals," said Lt. Clark Pennington, with the Frederick City Police Department.

Police stopped a car and found a male passenger inside who had been stabbed in the upper left torso. He was taken to Baltimore Shock Trauma in serious but stable condition.

"We believe one individual was stabbed and then shots began to be fired. We think anywhere from six to 10 shots were fired in the area," Pennington said. "Once the shots began to ring out, all the individuals who were watching the fight and involved in the fight began to scatter."

Police tape lined a block of West South Street for about five hours.

"We're trying to put together what actually caused the fight, and once we can put that together and develop a motive, then we can start to put the rest of the pieces together and see if it's even connected, linked to, or has anything to do with our Mullinix Alley shooting," Pennington said.

Anyone who has any information is asked to call Frederick City Police at 301-600-TIPS.
