Proposed Dress Code Now Seven Pages Long

CHAMBERSBURG, PA- Too baggy? Too short? Or too much exposure? These are some concerns the Chambersburg Area School Board hopes to address through a revised dress code.

"You know this isn't a nightclub that you're going to," says Joan Smith, a Chambersburg Area School Board member.

School officials created a dress code committee about a year ago to help teachers dress more professionally.

"What does that say when a teacher looks like a student? Not too much," says Smith.

And that slowly progressed to revising a better dress code for students. Some school officials say the current one is too broad, only half a page long. Other school board members say the one being proposed is too detailed - now seven pages long.

The president of the school board, Norman Blowers said in a statement: "All board members support an implementation of an improved dress code... But we don't all agree on the details of it and that's what we're working on."

Board members say they hope to have the new dress code by the end of the year.

School board members will meet with administrators Wednesday night In a private session to revise the proposed dress code.

We need more rules, mandates, and laws. If we eliminate all handguns people won't be shot with them. If we eliminate automobiles we can reduce drunk driving. If we mandate alternative fuels we can reduce our dependency on foreign oil. I'd like to dress Russell in a uniform. Start with a dunce cap!

I'm all about looking good! However, kids today dress too scantily and adult (I can't believe I would ever say this... I'm 38) but it's true. Teenagers don't belong in plunging necklines, tube tops, pants around their ankles, and what not while in school. PERIOD. There was once a time when parents understood what was appropriate and what was not. In an age when some parents want to be "friends" with their kids, instead of disciplined, mature role models, the result is 7-page school dress codes. All of this could be eliminated with uniforms.
