Habitat for Humanity Builds Home for World Habitat Day

WINCHESTER, VA - World Habitat Day is soon approaching and Winchester's Habitat for Humanity hammered away on another house that will change a family's life.

Jan Lower, one of the few members of Habitat, has done nothing but helped millions of families.

"We're helping families who are living in substandard housing, families who represent women, men, children and the conditions in some cases that they're living in are untenable," says Lower, program director of Habitat for Humanity.

Volunteers came from near and far to build a new home for a low income family that has been living in poor conditions.

It's become a public myth in which the houses are freely given to families but instead, the families take part in building their new home.

"We find that there's a lot more harmony in the household. The children do much better in school because they have a good place that's secure and that they can sleep at night," adds Lower.

Habitat says 95 million people in the United States deal with housing problems and their goal is to provide a healthy and stable home.

While it may seem like an everyday deed for habitat, it means much more to families.

"Very happy. Excited. Very blessed. Very blessed I have to say," says future homeowner, Jennifer Thompson.

Thompson also says she is grateful for herself, her family, and most importantly, her kids.

The house is expected to be finished by February.
