Hagerstown Celebrates Its 250th Anniversary

HAGERSTOWN, MD - A part of downtown Hagerstown closed down for motorists to celebrate a big birthday, 250 years.

Visitors got a chance to see what Hagerstown looked like then, now, and a glimpse into its future through displays. There was entertainment by the public square and also on South Potomac Street. The morning kicked off with music and also recognizing some of the city and county's former and present leaders.

"Being 250 years we've come a long way since Jonathan Hager first layed the plot for the city of Hagerstown," says Mayor Robert Bruchey of Hagerstown. "We've got a long way to go. All we got to do is keep pushing forward and find those answers to make Hagerstown be the place people wanna be."

There was also freebies for the first 250 people at different locations such as Krumpe's Donuts, keychains, coins, and balloons.

Reality can be a tough pill to swallow, but putting on rose-colored glasses is a dangerous alternative.

Negative responses to half of these articles is exactly what this city needs obviously.

What reason to celebrate could this dung heap of a city possibly have? 21% unemployment; no businesses to speak of; a dead and decaying downtown; the most poorly educated population of any comparably sized city in the state; the highest obesity rate; the highest smoking rate...you tell me. Is this worth celebrating!? It reminds me of the "post oil bust" cities of Midland-Odessa, TX. They celebrated their own stupidity and poverty, all the while believing they actually had something of which to be proud.
