Fred. Co., Md. Recycling Contest Kicks Off

FREDERICK COUNTY, MD - People who live in Frederick County, Md. can show their recycling creativity and win prizes at the same time.

"We're looking for photographs that focus on one of the county's blue curbside carts, so the cart needs to be featured in the photo. It could be a shot of a family member recycling, a team effort for recycling, we've even had a couple submissions of pets recycling," said Annmarie Creamer, recycling outreach program coordinator.

The Frederick County Office of Recycling is teaming up with TownePlace Suites by Marriott, the first ground-up LEED-certified hotel on the East Coast, for a green contest.

"I think it's the right thing to do. Rather than continue to put things in the landfill, we can take these things like paper and aluminum and recycling them and reuse these products, which really benefits our environment," said Michael Henningsen, director of hotel operations.

Through October 19th, county residents can submit a photo for the 'Put it in the Blue' contest.

"We're just really looking forward to seeing snapshots and scenes of recycling across the county, how different families recycle, how kids support recycling, all the different kinds of materials that can be recycled," Creamer said.

Some pictures already entered include a dog and a colonial woman recycling.

"A lot of folks recycle, but not everyone does, so it's a chance for people to show how easy it is to recycle and to maybe convince someone in their neighborhood or in their community that it's a worthwhile thing to participate in," Creamer said.

The grand prize winner gets a $600 portrait photography package and a $200 Marriott gift card.

The best under-age-13 entry wins one all-day pass and a $100 gift card to Adventure Park USA.

The public will vote on the People's Choice award on Facebook. That winners gets a $300 Marriott gift card.

"Recycling has been important," Henningsen said. "I think the emphasis has been increased by frederick county adding the larger bins to all their residents, and i just think it's a natural thing."
