Final Decisions on the Hagerstown Multi-Purpose Stadium

HAGERSTOWN, MD - It's been the debate of the decade, but now Hagerstown city officials say they hope the Suns will play baseball in a new stadium downtown by 2015.

"I expect an answer from Mr. Quinn within the next two weeks at the very most. At the same time, we also have to finalize the terms of the transfer for our donor, which will be a huge part of the project," says Ashley Haywood, Hagerstown City Councilwoman.

An anonymous person is finalizing a $15 million donation to Hagerstown. The City Council says they're anonymous until the final paperwork is signed.

"It's very exciting--somebody that is very passionate about Hagerstown baseball, and wants to leave a legacy for a dear friend of his. It's a fantastic portion of this project; it's how this project is possible right now," says Haywood.

Although many Hagerstown officials say they're ready to give the city a face-lift, over 900 people signed an anti-stadium petition. Yet Councilwoman, Ashley Haywood, says many of the opposing letters in her mailbox come from people who don't live here.

"I'm very aware of who my citizens are. I can guarantee you that at least 50 percent of people signing the petition aren't residents of the city of Hagerstown, at least another 25 percent of them aren't even residents of the county," says Haywood.

Pending the decision of Suns Owner Bruce Quinn, it looks like baseball is here to stay.
