On 12/27/2011 Investigators with the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I) arrested 63 year old Marvin Dale VanMeter, of Oldtown, after a warrant charging him with numerous sex offenses had been issued. VanMeter was arrested at a local business in Cumberland.
The charges are the result of an investigation by the Maryland State Police and C3I into allegations that VanMeter had sexually abused two teenaged boys, one 14 and the other 13 years of age. The abuse of one of the victims began when he was much younger and continued until the present. The other victim was abused one time during the summer of 2011.
VanMeter has been charged with 2nd Degree Sex Offense, 3rd Degree Sex Offense, Sex Abuse of a Minor, Perverted Practice, and numerous other related charges. He was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an initial appearance, and is currently being held at the Allegany County Detention Center on $250,000.00 bond, pending his next court appearance.
Investigators have identified several additional potential victims, and additional charges are anticipated. The investigation is continuing.
Allegany Co. Sheriff:
On 12/27/2011 at approximately 16:57 hours, Deputies of the Allegany County Sheriff's Office responded to Rt. 40 near Clareysville for a single vehicle crash. It was determined that 51 year old Richard Wayne Lewis of Joppa Maryland was operating a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado, traveling east bound on Rt. 40, when for reasons unknown he crossed the roadway into the west bound lane and struck the guardrail. Based upon deputies investigation and discovery Lewis was believed to be under the influence and in possession of a large quantity of suspected PCP. Lewis was arrested and charged with the following:
Driving under the influence
Driving while impaired
Failing to maintain right of center
Failing to control speed to avoid a collision
Possession of CDS
Possession of CDS paraphernalia
Possession of CDS with intent to distribute
Lewis was held on $7,500.00 at the Allegany County Detention Center.
A sum of currency and a firearm were also seized. Maryland State Police and C3I assisted in the incident.
