Santa Claus showed up in Shepherdstown to kick off the celebration.

People from here take a lot of pride in their unique town.  Founded by Thomas Shepherd in 1734, it was first called Mecklenburg, Va.

Now, Shepherdstown, W. Va. is widely considered one of the best kept secrets of the area. It's known for its scenery, quaint atmosphere and shepherd university.

"Well, I've lived in and around Shepherdstown for close to thirty years now, and I've  never been to a Christmas celebration so i figured it was about time," says Ian McBride, a Shepherdstown resident.
