Cantaloupes contaminated by Listeria are now linked to 23 deaths.
An additional 93 people were sickened by the outbreak.
Listeria is rare, and more deadly than better-known pathogens such as Salmonella and E. Coli.
The Centers for Disease Control say more deaths are possible because listeria symptoms can take up to two months to appear.
Deaths had previously been reported in Colorado, Colorado, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming. The CDC says the fruits came from Jensen Farms in Colorado.
