William Bulla Honored With People's Choice Award

William Bulla spent election day working the polls even though he just got out of the hospital for pneumonia.

He learned about the importance of service through his mother.

"She said son as you go through life, you may need the neighbors help," says Bulla.  "Please remember that and return it where you can."

Bulla has 40 years of perfect attendance with the North Hagerstown Lions Club.  He's served as president for the Washington County American Cancer Society.  And he's the creator of the "Toys For Happiness" drive in Frederick, Hagerstown, and La Vale, Md.

"Occasionally they let me dress as Santa, so that I could have the thrill of giving those toys to some of the children," he said.

"He's arguably the best volunteer, I've ever been around,"  says Leah Gayman, executive director of United Way in Washington County.

Bulla's dedication to United Way has saved them a significant amount of money.  Last year Bulla compiled a 16 page document for United Way's annual report.

"We couldn't have had the quality of document we had if it weren't for him," says Gayman.

"Many people have talents, and his are many, but I think instead of keeping them to himself, he shares them without hesitation," says Jenny Fleming with United Way of Washington County.

Some of his talents include water color painting and writing.  Bulla's uses those skills to help his community.  He's donated his work to Pickett News as a writer for more than 10 years.

Every year Bill donates about six of his paintings to charities like United Way and Habitat for Humanity.  Each painting is worth about $250 to $500.

"We do things for that feeling we get and the smile we get in return, and knowing that somebody's life is better," says Bulla.

"He's always that person who at the end of the day, regardless how the day went, he will say thank you, even though he's done all the work," Gayman said.

Those who have worked with Bulla, says he's a champion, someone they can always call on.
