Franklin County, PA - It was 1949, six years after a young Glenn Hissong returned home from fighting in World War II.

He and his wife Mae, bought a small dairy farm in Mercersburg.

Now 55 years later, there is a new generation running a much different farm.

Rick and Rod Hissong are the grand-children of the original founders. They along with their parents have changed the farm from a mom-and-pop operation, to the biggest dairy farm in Franklin County.

The farm which is open 24-7 employs almost 30 full-time workers, but owners say this isn't a sweat shop for the cows.

"The milk that we sell is what pays the bills, so this cow needs to be happy, she needs to be fed well, she needs to be housed correctly, she needs to be cared for," says Rod Hissong. "We go to great lengths to make sure she is happy," he says.

The farm also uses technology to monitor each animal.

"She has a health sheet on the computer, every health action we do is put into the computer," he says.

The owners say each cow generates over $13,000 for the local economy, about $23-million each year.
