WHAG to Expand Coverage and Newscasts on Monday

FOUR STATE AREA - Some big changes are heading your way on August 30th for WHAG.

The station is expanding with more news each week and more news from different areas.

Next week, the cities of Leesburg, Berryville and Winchester in Virginia, people will be seeing a lot more reporters.

WHAG is opening a new bureau in northern Virginia meaning more news coverage for our viewers in this area.

That's not the only change that will be hitting the airwaves.

"We're about to embark on some major program changes, most specifically changing our news operation," says Hugh Breslin, the general manager of WHAG.  "We're going to be adding about 11 hours of additional, local news."

Starting August 30th, when you turn on WHAG, you'll find more local news with an additional half hour to our noon and 5 p.m. newscasts.  There will also be another half hour of news at 7 p.m.

"A lot of folks get home a lot later now, so 7 p.m. is going to be an ideal newscast for them to catch up on what's going on locally," says Mark Kraham, WHAG's news director.

For the weekend, a morning edition of local news has also been added in addition to the evening weekend report.

"Seven days we'll be providing the first look at the area's news," says Breslin.

These changes mean WHAG's staff is growing too.

A northern Virginia bureau will keep our shows full of news affecting that region.

"As we serve the four-state area, it's probably the area that we have not had the ability to get to on a day-to-day basis, as often as we would like to do so," says Breslin.

"The four-state area is very interdependent on each other, some people work in one area, volunteer in another and live in another," says Kraham.

"Their confidence in us has allowed us to grow," says Breslin.  "That's really exciting for [us] at the station, our staff, but also for the community at large."

WHAG's extended coverage in the northern Virginia area means we will be looking for stories that affect viewers in this region.

If you any news tips feel free to email us at news@whag.com or call us any time at 301-797-4408.

All of the changes will take place on August 30th, this includes some changes in our programming.

It should be interesting to see how this plays out. I gave the 7PM newscast a try, but it started out with the same stories that played at 6PM. So, I flipped the channel. I'm not certain that this market can support the increased hours of news coverage. Bring back the Wheel and Jeopardy! I'm certainly below 55 yo; but like watching these puzzle and quiz shows! Also, looking at the schedule, you've got several hours of "Paid Programming". . . Infomercials, during the day.

im not sure i understand the reasoning behind this change, but i cant be the only one who is not pleased with it.im afraid i have to agree with everything eric said. im far below 55, but i enjoyed watching jeopardy at 7:30 every evening, and i have no desire to watch inside edition instead. im sorry that the one of the only stations i can tune into felt the need to make this change, but im sure they thought they were doing what they need to, its a shame.

I'm sorry, but I think this is a lousy idea. Watching WHAG news from show-to-show, the same (often less-than newsworthy) stories are aired repeatedly--sometimes all weekend or several times in the morning. There just isn't enough news in this area to justify adding 7 more hours a week: it's more about the advertising dollars, I'm sure. I'll be interested to see if the time can be devoted to anything worth reporting.

Second: I know everyone over age 55 is going to be flipping the channel come 7 o'clock in search of Wheel of Fortune, so say goodbye to those viewers! As for myself, I sat through local ads just to watch Jeopardy in high-def; now, I'll have to turn to ABC to get my intellectual fix. From the billboards around town, I would have thought these two programs were popular. What happened?

Maybe you'll think about improving the look and loading times of the NBC 25 website as well.

I think it's great you guys are expanding, I would like to see more coverage of pro sports, scores, stats, etc., not just the 4 state area major teams, would like to see coverage of all u.s. pro sport teams
