When Shelbyville police first started their pursuit, they thought they were after a drunk driver out of control. He is weaving, he is all over the road. He cant stay in his lane, said police officer Josh Laverette. Watch as he makes a left highway 82, off the road and nearly into a telephone pole. It could have been very serious, said Laverette. The chase for a driver who would not stop quickly gained momentum, causing a scene for neighbors as more patrolmen joined in. There were like probably five city cars and five county cars and state troopers, said witness Susan Daniel. Things got even more dangerous when the pickup almost slammed into a car waiting at a red light. Officers would later learn the driver was a second-grader barely standing four feet tall. He was so short, he had to sit up close to the steering wheel and whenever he would brake, he would pick himself up with his left foot, stomp on the brake with his right, said Laverette. It blew my mind because we actually watched him put on his turn signal and turn and we could see when he went past us that he had his seatbelt on, said Daniel. This seven year old was on the fast track to trouble, but this was no video game, rather the real deal. According to police he narrowly avoided five head-on collisions before parking his parents pickup back at their home. And then come to find out he was a child, I was really shocked, said Daniel. According to officer Laverette, he said the reason he took the vehicle was because he wanted to get his license.
