Benefit Raises Funds for Cancer Patients

FREDERICK, MD - Hundreds of supporters packed into Champion's Billiards in Frederick to raise money for a little girl and a woman battling cancer.

Many residents bid for all kinds of things up for auction, everything from football jerseys to flowers.  Although many walked away with nice items, the battle against cancer is not so desirable.

Two-year-old Ciana Rutledge was born with a rare form of soft-tissues cancer.  She has had her bladder, uterus and part of her vaginal wall removed.  Her father said she doesn't even understand what is happening.

"You don't see how it's hurting her with constantly getting poked and proded and stuff like that, yes, she has cancer, she doesn't understand it," says Brian Rutledge. "She doesn't realize what she has."

While she might not understand it, she sure is fighting the cancer that is in her little body.

It's a battle to live that another Frederick resident understands firsthand.  Beth Churco is fighting breast cancer.  She was touched so many friends came to the benefit to help her pay for her medical expenses.  "I haven't seen some of these people in 10, 15, 20 years and to know they are coming out to support me and Ciana is just indescribable really," she said.

All of the proceeds from the event will go to help the families pay for treatments.  Beth Churco will undergo more radiation and surgery this summer.  Ciana and her family will spend the summer in Boston, paid for in part by those who showed their support at the benefit.

To donate to either Beth or Ciana, please go to their benefit pages:
