HAGERSTOWN, MD - Remember cash for clunkers? Uncle Sam now has another program that's putting money back in your pocket.

This time you can save if you upgrade your appliances to an energy-efficient model.

It's the next economic stimulus package, buy a water heater and pocket a $300 rebate. You can even save on appliances like refrigerators and washers and dryers.

The Energy Star models are giving you cash back, but you'll also see the savings long-term.

"The high energy is going to save on the water in the washers and the energy in the refrigerators," says Sears manager Peggy Campbell.  "It is a value to the customer and a long-term investment and savings to the consumer."

Each state gets a share of $300 million and the rebate's on a first-come, first-serve basis.

"There are a lot of people that are going to be making these purchases and very quickly, so I don't know how long the money will last," says Curt Spicher with Spicher's Appliances.  "We've teamed up with our appliance manufacturers who know this program is going on and have offered discounts and extra rebates, so there's a lot of things going on."

"We're offering the 30% off all Energy Star appliances plus the Maryland state stimulus, which can save up to $300," says Campbell.

And companies like Allegheny Energy have been offering rebates if you recycle your clunker appliance. The best way to get the most bang for your buck though, is to talk to the experts.

"We're on it, we know what's going on," says Spicher.  "We can qualify you and you'll know when you walk out whether you'll get it or not or at least qualify for it."

The savings start earth day, so take some time to shop around.

Sears stores in Maryland will be opening early at 6:00 a.m.
