MARTINSBURG, WV- The Martinsburg Police Department say a Stephens City man is dead after stabbing a police officer Wednesday night.

It happened around 11:45 p.m. in the 100 block of South Queen Street.

Martinsburg Police say five officers from their department came across 50-year-old Wayne Arnold Jones of Stephens City, Va.,  and asked Jones if he was carrying any weapons on him. According to police, Jones said he was carrying something but would not tell police what it was.

Police say they ordered Jones to place his hands on the cruiser so the weapon could be removed safely. They say Jones became angry and refused to corroperate with officers.

Police say they used a taser on Jones twice which yielded minimal effect. They say Jones fled away from officers to the 100 block of South Queen Street to a doorway entrance of a house.

Officers caught up with Jones and attempted to restrain him to the ground. Police say while on the ground Jones actively fought with officers and pulled out a knife, stabbing an officer in the stomach.

Police say they told Jones to drop the knife, at which point he tried to get up from the ground and officers fired multiple rounds at Jones.

One witness told us when they looked outside they saw a body lying on the ground in the street.

"I was woken up by a lot of gunshots, it was right outside, so I got up and my boyfriend had come down here and looked out the door. He actually saw a body on the street surrounded by police," says Melissa Sheehan, a Martinsburg resident.

Medics were immediately called to the scene. Officers attempted to resuscitate Jones but were unsuccessful.

Police say the officer who was stabbed suffered minor injuries and did not require any medical attention.

All five officers have been placed on paid administrative leave. West Virginia State Police say they're conducting an investigation into the incident.

An autopsy will be performed on the body.

Comments

Maybe if he hadn't yielded a knife in the first place, he'd still be alive.

One older man and a knife, 5 cops and two taser blast. Man dead and cop don't even need a doctor? Maybe more training.
