ANNAPOLIS, MD- The Maryland House of Delegates debated repealing the death penalty Wednesday evening in Annapolis.

Lawmakers began debating the bill around 6:30 Wednesday evening. Opponents presented 18 Amendments.

The bill passed in the Maryland Senate last week with a 27-to-20 vote.

Maryland would become the 18th state to end capitol punishment, but the bill was not voted on during the session on Wednesday evening. It's expected to come up for a vote on Friday.

WHAG spoke with Governor Martin O'Malley and he said that if the House of Delegates passes the bill, that he would sign it into law.  It is unknown what would happen to the people that are on death row right now.
