Jefferson County Sheriff's Position Remains Empty

JEFFERSON COUNTY, WV- It's been several weeks since the
unexpected resignation of former Jefferson County Sheriff, Bobby Shirley.
Now,
county officials are turning to the attorney general for help.
"They verified that we're not under an obligation and that we can't have a primary general election," says Dale Manuel, president of the commissioners.
Their other option is keeping Chief Jones as the manager of the sheriff's department until the next election, something Chief Jones has already expressed interest in.
"He has made it clear that he
would but he's not eligible right now because he's not a
County officials have submitted a formal request to the attorney general's office asking if they can keep the interim manager in his position until 2014.
While they wait for that response, they're also considering advertising for the job.
"Some people have already turned in resumes," says Manuel. "Two of them are clerks."
County officials say they will advertise the position for two weeks but don't know when they'll make it official.
