Firehouse Subs Donates to Shepherdstown Fire Department

"I could see from my window at home, our business was going up in smoke, I could actually see the smoke from Walkersville in Frederick and I knew my husband was okay, because these guys were out there taking care of him," says Katie Kaczor.
Restaurant owners Greg and Katie Kaczor opened the chain, Firehouse Subs, after their liquor store at Antieam Village burnt down by an armed robber in 2007.
"People don't realize what happens when you have a fire, until it actually affects them and then you realize what these guys do on a daily basis," says Kaczor.
The Kaczor's say giving back is important, and donating this gear is a way of showing how thankful they are.
"We actually got off a fire the day Lieutenant Henderson got the e-mail saying we got the grant, and I never heard of it," says Shepherdstown Volunteer EMS Lieutenant, Coy Beverage.
Ten new sets of bunker gear costing nearly $20,000 was all donated through the foundation, with the help of the community.
"This is really special, a food chain like this giving back," says Lieutenant Daniel Henderson.
"We don't know which dollar is going to save a life but we know the equipment we can give them can makes a difference," says Kaczor.
Firehouse subs created the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation back in 2005. The non profit has given nearly $6 million to Hometown Heroes in the U.S., including more than $54,000 in Maryland.
