FREDERICK COUNTY, MD - The Frederick County Bureau of Investigation is looking into a shooting involving two Frederick County Sheriff Office Deputies, that left one man dead Thursday morning.

The Bureau of Investigation says deputies Charles Zang and Kevin Riffle, were helping Howard County Police serve a high risk search and seizure warrant.

They say it happened around 1:00 a.m. at an apartment in the 48 hundred block of Westwind Drive in Mount Airy, Maryland.

The warrant was related to a home invasion robbery earlier this week.

When Frederick County Special Services Team entered the apartment using a "flash bang" diversionary device while announcing "Sheriff's Office." Police say a man, identified as Daniel Vail,19, was found in one of the bedrooms pointing a shot-gun toward them.

Officers asked Vail to put down the gun, and fired when he did not comply.

Vail was pronounced dead at the scene. A women found in the apartment, claiming to be Vail's mother, was taken into custody but was later released.

Officials say around 6:00 a.m. Thursday, Howard County Investigators along with Sheriff's Office evidence technicians recovered numerous shell casings and will be working with investigators to determine the number of shots fired by the involved deputies.

Vail's body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore and an autopsy will be completed Friday.

The two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, as policy while an internal investigation will coincide with the criminal investigation pending an outcome.
