Thanksgiving Eve: Busy Night for Bars

HAGERSTOWN, MD - Before mama carves the turkey on Thanksgiving Day, the night before attracts big crowds into the bars.

"This will probably be my number one night or two," says Daryll Sword, Owner of the Corner Pub. "St. Patrick's Day is usually busy also. So unfortunately, I have two big nights every year that I really depend on. Extra, extra large business and an abundance of people."

Like the Corner Pub in Hagerstown, bars around the country claim Wednesday night to be on top of the list of busiest nights.

Thursday and Friday are Federal holidays so most people are off. One bartender, Brittany Richards, has been serving drinks at the Corner Pub for seven years and says each year the crowds grow.

"Everyone has tomorrow off,"says Richards. "No expectations other than being lazy and eating so you're not worried about doing anything other than recuperating from the night before."

It also helps the holidays bring family and friends together, bringing in more visitors.

"Lots of people are home to celebrate tomorrow with friends and family," says Brenna Ranieli. "They've all gotten into town and everybody's ready to meet up because we all know that we're here."

Police say their holiday patrol begins on Wednesday night and say they're very aware it's one of the busiest nights out at the bars and will be checking the roads for DWI's.

Richards says, "Tomorrow all your family want you to be home and be safe and to remember not to drink and drive but to have fun."
