Shelter Volunteers Await Hurricane Sandy Refugees

HAGERSTOWN, MD - We're under a state of emergency as Hurricane Sandy hit-hard in the Four-State Area.

Precautions were taken for those caught in the storm.  The Red Cross set up a shelter for displaced families and pets at North Hagerstown High School.

Red Cross Volunteer Mark Rose says, "We're providing a warm place. We're providing snack foods as well as meals and we're supplying cots for people to spend the night in blankets."

Only a handful of people went to the high school to seek refuge.  At another emergency shelter in Greencastle, it was just the volunteers.

Community Grace Church Volunteer, Frank Bercaw, says "Picking on one another having fun, you know weathering the storm and making light of things, the situation. It's a nasty thing that's happening out there and we want the community to know we're here for them."

Hurricane Sandy is moving swiftly across the states and the worst of the hurricane is happening through Monday night.

"We had a teacher that said if I was displaced I'd want games so she brought a whole box of games and stuffed animals," says Rose.

Volunteers say despite the storm, they're happy to see the community band together.

Bercaw says, "I saw how fast the creek rose. How saturated the ground became. We were moving farm animals this morning and it really got nasty pretty quick."
