CHARLES TOWN, WV- Fire officials say a woman is dead after a house fire Monday morning in Jefferson County.

The blaze broke out around 1:30 a.m. at a home on Packett Drive in the Tuscawilla subdivision of Charles Town.

When firefighters arrived, they say a majority of the house was covered in smoke and flames.

Officials say another woman was able to escape out of a second story window and was taken to Jefferson Memorial Hospital for smoke inhalation.

Fire officials say they would like to greatly stress the importance of having a working smoke alarm detector in your house.

The West Virginia State Fire Marshal's Office says the victim is described as an older woman in her 60's. They say the name will be released following a final autopsy and notification of all family members.

"I feel for the family and our prayers go out to them," says Jeff Gilleas, a Jefferson County resident. "If there is anything they need, hopefully the community will be in together to help."

The flames were put out around 6 a.m. Monday morning. The West Virginia State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause.
