Two Houses Rebuilt in Frederick's Historic District

FREDERICK, MD- Two new homeowners, thanks to hundreds of volunteers in the community.

"I haven't had a kitchen of my own to cook in in five years.... I love to cook. I teach cooking at the school where I work, so I get to cook at school, but I don't get to cook at home for me and my family," says new homeowner Monica Ajlouny.

And now all that's changing, and Monica's 16-year-old daughter is excited for mom's home cooked meals.

The families get to move into their new houses in about a month when construction is complete. The new neighbors say, they're excited to have a home to call their own.

"Before this opportunity with Habitat I thought maybe I wouldn't be a homeowner at any point, my daughter's in high school and this is something I really wanted to provide for her," say new homeowner Kelly Beard.

Being right in the Historic District, the families say will make life easier. Volunteers say the location did make building the homes a bit tougher, but still worth it.

"The historic district means we have to do a wood door metal roof so a little more effort goes into a house like this," says Ron Cramer, of Habitat for Humanity

"We also are really excited because once our project is finished, there will be more projects. So we will have the opportunity to help other families get the same experience," says Beard.

Next, they'll help repair and refurbish about 80 homes on Bentz Street all the way down to east Street.
