FREDERICK, MD - The 40th annual log sawing contest is winding down.

"I'm the ninth generation farmer in Middletown. My family has a dairy farm, it's my whole life. I wouldn't be where I am today without agriculture," says Esther Shafer, Middletown High School.

Esther Shafer and Kiley Flimmer are both juniors at Middletown High School and say AG week is a very important and they look forward to it every year.

"It informs people in the area about agriculture, how important it is, and it let's them see how much fun you can have with it," says Kiley Flimmer, of Middletown High-school.

Students say AG week is a chance to show what they know about farming and the outdoors, while organizers say it's a chance for the students to learn hands on.

"Nothing like hands on. That's the way I am, and I'm sure a lot of the kids. You can read it in a book, but you just got to get out and see it, and do it." says Ronald Murphy, AG Week Organizer.

Kiley lives on a farm, and raises her own beef cattle and horses. She says she has been practicing for the competition.

"Agriculture takes up my whole life, all my time, but I love every minute of it," says Flimmer.

Students and parents say the event is a tradition full of fun that brings people from all over the county together.

Frederick County Public School's Agricultural Week will go on until Saturday February 23, 2013 at the Francis Scott Key Mall.
