CHAMBERSBURG, PA - The Borough of Chambersburg is now powering homes with electricity converted from trash. It's an innovative money-saver, using state of the art technology.

Officials say Borough trash goes to a landfill and turns into Methane gas over time then turned into electric power.

Now 15 percent of Chambersburg's entire power supply is coming from renewable energy; whereas the state of Pennsylvania is at about four percent.

Officials say they're excited to lead the country in sustainable energy.

"We do pay for it, but it's a resource that's coming out of the ground from trash. It's sustainable, renewable power," says Ron Pezon, Electric Superintendent with the Borough of Chambersburg.

Officials say this renewable energy landfill already powers about 2,000 local homes, reducing utility costs by about 15 percent.
