Anglers Saving Children's Lives

BRUNSWICK, MD - The water is crystal clear, the crowd is in good spirits, but don't let that fool you.

"A lot of heart," says Mary Baker, an organizer for the Bass Fishing Tournament, the fifth annual fund-raiser for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Fishing in winter weather takes guts.

"To get up in the morning at three o'clock, and show up when it's 27 degrees for a cause like this, that's dedication," says David Baker, an organizer for the Bass Fishing Tournament.

David and Mary Baker helped organized the fifth annual Bass Fishing Tournament in Brunswick to raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Tennessee. Even though it's located states away, the couple says its research affects the world.

"Somebody here in the Hagerstown area that maybe goes to Children's Hospital, or Johns Hopkins, or University of Maryland, the way that they're able to treat the cancer is the research that's coming out of St. Jude," adds Mary.

These anglers have raised more than $5,000 in the past years' tournaments. David says they'll have a hundred people show up to watch the fish weigh-in at the end of the day.

"That's the most exciting part. Everybody's anticipating who's going to win. They'll come in, the fish have to be 15 inches to keep, five fish limit per boat," says David.

And even though some fishermen docked their boats empty-handed, they smile and say fishing for the good health of others is worth it.

"You know they see these guys out here on a day like this, when it's freezing out, the fishing's not that great this time of year; but people who don't fish can relate to that: Hey these guys are putting in some effort for these kids at St. Jude. That says a lot," adds David.
