HAGERSTOWN, MD- The Washington County Sheriff's Office say two people were taken to the hospital with serious injuries after a police chase on I-81 ended in a head-on collision.

Sgt. Hanley, with the Washington County Sheriff's Office, says around 12:20 p.m. police received a complaint of a shoplifter at the Sears Store located on Valley Mall Road.

Police say the description of the suspect matched a person that had been in the store Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday stealing items. The suspect's vehicle, a van, also matched the description of a stolen vehicle reported in Hagerstown a few days before.

Police say once identified, the suspect fled the scene.

When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, it accelerated away. The suspect began traveling the wrong way on a ramp from southbound I-81 to eastbound Route 40 at which point the officers held back and kept visual contact.

Police say the suspect crashed head-on into another vehicle as it was traveling the wrong way on the ramp.

The suspect and the driver of the other vehicle were taken to Meritus Medical Center with serious injuries. Their identities are not being released at this time.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office is still investigating this incident.
