HAGERSTOWN, MD - Another year, another diet. Getting fit could be one of the most common but broken New Year's resolutions; but is it getting easier to stay on the healthy track?
"Not for people my age. I think the younger generation is much more health conscious. The kids are real absolute about being thin and fit. Once you get my age you say, 'I'm going to enjoy some things,' " says Kathy Lewis, a local shopper.
Local grocery stores say they're focused on offering fresh options. The Martin's Food Markets promote "Healthy Ideas." A program that brings schools into the store to learn about wholesome foods.
"There's certainly ample choices," says Lewis.
"Peanut-free, Gluten-free, Lactose intolerant, there's just so many things out there now, soy products," says Kevin Dugger, Assistant Manager with Martin's Food Market in Hagerstown.
And eating smart can be done cheaper: Martin's says they coupon heavily during the first months of the year.
"Times have changed I believe because 25-30 years ago, all you could get for a vegetarian would be, in a restaurant, you'd get a tomato and lettuce and that's it, and a potato," says Greg McGrath, a local shopper.
This year's marketing strategies seem like they're working in favor of thriving families.
"Being a father of a six and two year-old boy, that's very important that they're eating right and I'm modeling the same behavior, getting those fruits and vegetables and stuff that is not going to go a long way in the future for us," says Dugger.
Get fit in 2013 just might work out.
Dieting is all about lifestyle and how you eat. A book that may be helpful for eating better and is also helpful when cooking for one is %u201Cthe no-diet lifestyle%u201D. This can explain things better and has recipes as well. It can be bought off amazon and is rather cheap.
