Delegate Working on Emergency Spice Ban Bill

FREDERICK, MD - Delegate Galen Clagett is working on two emergency bills to ban spice in the Frederick County and in Maryland.

He's drafting the bills now and hopes to present them to the Frederick County Delegation within the next few weeks.

"It's a health hazard. It's very addictive. It's very dangerous, and any dangerous and controlled substance needs to be controlled, if not banned," says Clagett (D).

Thurmont and Frederick City recently banned spice, and Clagett says synthetic marijuana is now being sold in other parts of the county.

"It's obvious that these things are starting to open in the county, and when the city banned them and pushed them out of the city, they looked to Urbana and south on 85," says Clagett. "I think there's a location there."

If the bills pass, they'd become law as soon as Governor Martin O'Malley signs them.

"It was obvious to me that they were going to go wherever they could do to sell this product, and that means we need to stop it here and now in this county, and I think we should do the same for the whole state as well."

Senator Ron Young (D) will sponsor the bill on the senate side.

Walkersville will hold a meeting this Wednesday to consider banning spice.
