Less People and Less Error with New Reconstruction System

WASHINGTON COUNTY, MD - After a serious accident, authorities can spend hours on the scene investigating what happened and sometimes that could back up traffic for miles.
However, a new system is helping the Washington County Sheriff's Department with investigations more quickly and efficiently.
Authorities like David Izat, from the Washington County Sheriff's Department, collects the data to map out how crashes happened. It usually takes about an hour, but it hasn't been like this until recently.
"What we used to do was run a baseline tape measure and we tried to run it in a straight line as possible," says Deputy Izat.
On average it used to take the sheriff's department several hours for the reconstruction process, but now they use a system called a Nikon Nivo to measure distances.
They say before there was more room for error with a tape measure. The system also helps people on the roads.
"When it comes down to roadways open, it becomes a safety issue because more fender benders happen when you're processing an accident," says Deputy Carly Hose, Washington County Sheriff's Department.
