WINCHESTER, VA - It was a cold morning in Virginia, but that did not stop two organizations from doing a good deed.
"It helps out a lot because I can get some extra stuff when I'm low on cash," says Renee Kerns, a family member who is part of the 400 families receiving help.
She says no one should ever be ashamed to ask for a little push.
"Don't hesitate to go out and ask for help, it's not that hard to do," adds Kerns.
Members from Feed the Children teamed up with the Star Touring & Riding Association to provide food and essentials for families in need.
According to a press release, "More than one in four children living in Winchester is considered impoverished. In fact, the number of children living in poverty in Virginia can fill Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. more than six times."
Robert Reed, the president of the Winchester Star Chapter, believes the economy is not helping.
"I think it's a job situation, the gas prices, food prices are all up but a lot of it is job situations. This area here, there's not much more that helps," says Reed.
Feed the Children partnered with The Salvation Army in picking out eligible families. Each family received a box of food and personal care items that will last up to one week.
"I like the fact that I'm helping my community and I've even volunteered for The Salvation Army and the Christmas thing. I like helping the community. I've seen a lot of these people. I know a lot of these people that we meet," adds Reed.
Family members were more than grateful to have such a big help and they drove off happy to know a financial burden was taken off their backs.
