BRUNSWICK - The young man who struck a high school sophomore in the head in front of a WHAG reporter is being charged with assault, according to the Frederick County Sheriff's Office.

The unnamed teenager hit Preston Deener, 15, in the head while WHAG reporter Katie Kyros was preparing to interview him about bullying his Brunswick High School.

The incident happened across the street from the school.  WHAG captured footage of the teen approaching Preston and then following him as he ran back to school property.

WHAG showed the video to school administrators and the police immediately after the incident.

Deputies say the boy charged with assault was not involved in any other incidents involving Preston Deener.

Here is the release from the Sheriff's Office:

On 10/11/2012, the Frederick County Sheriff's Office concluded an investigation concerning an incident that occurred at the Brunswick Little League Park at 100 A Cummings Drive, Brunswick, MD on 10/8/2012.  The investigation found that a 15 year old male Brunswick resident was assaulted by another 15 year old male Brunswick resident in the presence of local media personnel.  The juvenile suspect has been charged via referral to the Department of Juvenile Services with one count of 2nd Degree Assault (CR-3-203).  The investigation revealed that this was an isolated incident and is unrelated to any previous incidents involving the victim.
