  • Holiday Card Recycling Help
    Reported by: Nikki Burdine

    Saturday, Dec 29, 2007 @08:46pm EST

NBC25 - These days everyone is finding new ways to go green -- even with your holiday cards.

After Christmas is over, what do you do with the cards you've received?  Throw them away?  Store them in boxes?  Instead, try recycling them.  Karen Lehr says its easy to do.

"I'll take the front off, re-matt it on a slightly larger piece -- you know that is folded so you have a brand new piece so we have a brand new greeting in side."

She also said you can even use them as ornaments for next year.

"Some of the really pretty pre-printed holiday cards that you buy in the store that aren’t necessarily hand- made, that have the glitter ... you can make gift boxes and you can get templates off the internet, to make little gift boxes or envelopes."

She said it’s an easy way to make someone feel special by getting something home made.

"Its unique -- you are giving something that’s not store bought, and the people who get it think you made it so it looks like you spent a lot of time on it."

But if you're not the crafty type, don't worry -- Crop Til You Drop has classes to get you started.

Ralph Sherrill, the owner, said, "Normally what we will do is we have 12 cards, one at each station, and then it’s a 22 dollar class, less than two dollars a card.  So you get to put special touches in them."

But don't stop there -- it can even be used in scrap books.

"Well they are scrap book material anyway, so you might as well incorporate that into your scrap book as memories, because that’s what the whole scrap booking concept is, preserving memories."

Natalie Hartman, a Hallmark employee, said it’s a good way to utilize those cards from Christmases long ago.

"I think a lot of people would do that, especially with the cards they receive over the years.  Like a lot of people like to keep their Christmas cards, and I feel like it would be a good way to help save the environment and be creative with the cards."

So with all these ideas for your Christmas cards, there's no reason to throw anything away.

Another suggestion for your old holiday cards is to use them for decoration next year.  For more information on holiday card classes, contact Crop Til You Drop.
