Reported by: Sarah Hopkins Thursday, Nov 12, 2009 @11:22pm EST HAGERSTOWN, MD - Women in Hagerstown got the chance Thursday night to learn how to manage their diabetes in style.
"Divabetic" helps women tap into their inner diva by exercising with feather boas and learning to spice up their fruits and veggies. Experts with the Department of Endocrinology at Robinwood Medical Center say western Maryland has an especially high number of people suffering from diabetes, and that's why they wanted to bring the program here. "Divabetic's goal is to take diabetes education out of the clinical setting," said Max Szadek, also known as "Mr. Divabetic." "We mix it with with feather boas, mix it with music, we add empowerment, because we really want to show people, broaden the appeal of the outreach and make it easier for them to understand," Szadek said. Divabetic is a non-profit organization that travels through cities across the country. Organizers say it took about eight months to bring the program to Hagerstown. |
