  • Girl Endures 27-Hour Ordeal After Tick Embeds Itself in...
    Reported by: Jacqueline Waite

    Thursday, Nov 12, 2009 @05:26pm EST

NEW MARKET, MD - Autumn is the time of year when it's pretty common to find a tick on your pet or on yourself, but one Frederick County girl found a tick in a place most doctors have only read about in textbooks.

Brianna Adams had never seen a tick before and never expected to see one as close as she did.

She recalls, "I just thought my eye was itching, and then my mom looked at it and was like, 'Something's in there.'"

"It was hanging out, so I tried to grab it out and I knew it was attached well," says Brianna's mom, Christina Beachner.

So Christina took her daughter to Frederick Memorial Hospital with the tick embedded in her daughter's cornea. Eventually they ended up at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore.

"I think when we were at Hopkins we probably had 20 or more doctors look at her within the six hours," Christina remembers.

Twenty-seven hours after they discovered the tick, doctors slit open her eye to get it out. They accounted for all the legs and gave the tick to Brianna's mother in a jar.

Christina is keeping Brianna home from school to watch for signs of Lyme Disease. But what they still don't know is how the tick got in there.

Brianna thinks she may have gotten the tick while she was playing at Deer Crossing Elementary out at recess. But she says she never felt anything fly into her eye.

"I was doing cartwheels and sitting on the ground and all that. Maybe it popped into my eye accidentally," she says.

Now she has a pet tick. He may not be alive, but he does have a name.

"Hurt," Briana says, "Because it hurt my eye."

Christina Beachner says doctors ran many tests before they did the surgery. They expect Brianna and her eyesight to be just fine.
