Reported by: Jackie Cutler Thursday, Nov 12, 2009 @05:24pm EST FREDERICK, MD - Not everything that glitters is gold, but in Frederick, the Golden Mile is on the verge of a major renovation.
The area may have lost some of its luster, but now a new development may be the start of a major revitalization effort. It's called "The Golden Mile Getaway" and it offers 20,000 square feet of retail space along with a bank. Those traveling into the west end of town will see a complete renovation. The site that used to house the old Maryland State Police barracks sat vacant for several years, but then a developer took interest and purchased the property in 2005. It's one improvement that will unfold just as the city's new administration gets situated. "The developments we seek to attract and the ones we work for that they really add to the overall character of that community, and they fit into an overall plan that it not be a piecemeal approach but a comprehensive plan," says Alderman-Elect Michael O'Connor. O'Connor says the project is a start, but he hopes to create a task force and get residents involved, turning their attention to the mile that lies beyond the golden gateway. Thursday night at 7:00 the city's new administration is holding its first public hearing. One of the topics on the agenda is how to revitalize the Golden Mile. |
