Reported by: Sarah Hopkins Wednesday, Nov 4, 2009 @10:41pm EST FREDERICK, MD - Hundreds of people gathered for a town hall meeting Wednesday night to address more than 30-million dollars in cuts to state programs for people with disabilities. There was standing room only for the meeting, and many in attendance say they're personally affected by this year's cuts to the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Administration. In a year when lawmakers faced an exceptionally lean budget, the DDA is hardly alone, but speakers said cuts to the programs are leaving their families with few options. There are 19-thousand people on the waiting list for DDA services, and this year, according to The Arc of Frederick, only thirty people will get off that list. Some people in attendance said their loved ones have been on the waiting list for a decade or more. "I'm getting older and so is she and eventually she's going to need to move on to a life without me...And with the budget cuts this is affecting all of the people who are on the waiting list," said Margie Allen, a mother young woman with a disability and the president of the Arc of Frederick's board of directors. Some of the services these families are waiting for include in-home support, life skills coaching-- even assistance with basic needs like bathing, grooming and eating. Several local politicians were in attendance, and organizers are encouraging anyone opposed to the cuts to contact Governor Martin O'Malley's office. |
