FREDERICK, MD - A group of dogs in Frederick is fulfilling the role of man's best friend and taking it one step further.

They're enlisted to become guide dogs for the blind, which means up until they are 18 months they will live with a puppy raiser who sets the foundation for their training as a seeing guide dog.

The dogs learn how to ignore distractions and stay focused.

From there they're sent to New York for a more formal education.

"You actually go to New York for a graduation and you meet their blind partner. It's just overwhelming and you see the dog you had as a little puppy chewing things and running around, you see what a big difference he makes," says Becky Little with Guiding Eyes for the Blind.

Every year, out of about 300 dogs, only half go on to become seeing guide dogs.
