Reported by: Charya Lon Wednesday, Nov 4, 2009 @06:21pm EST FREDERICK, MD - A Germantown man was killed after he caught fire at a gas station in Frederick Wednesday morning.
The blaze happened at the Exxon station on Route 85 near the I-270 exit across from the FSK Mall. Emergency crews were called just after 4:00 a.m. Ainsley Gordon, Jr. was filling up a gas can when somehow the fire started, quickly engulfing him and his car. Fire officials say the 26-year-old suffered third degree burns on 100% of his body. He was flown to Medstar in Washington, D.C. and was pronounced dead around 9:00 a.m. Two witnesses saw Gordon on fire. A sheriff's deputy grabbed a water bottle to try to extinguish the flames. A person passing by also helped. The gas station attendant shut the fuel off to the pumps. The Exxon is a familiar one. It's across the street from the Francis Scott Key Mall, a common stop for commuters heading on to Interstate 270.Route 85 was closed for more than an hour. Authorities say there are no witnesses, and the cause of the fire is still being investigated by the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office. |
