Reported by: Jeannie Flitner Tuesday, Oct 20, 2009 @10:38pm EDT HAGERSTOWN, MD - A historically registered house off of Leitersburg Pike in Hagerstown has quite a history. It hosted wounded soldiers during the civil war, and was home to Dr. Frederick Dorsey, a well known doctor who travelled around Washington County.
Now the house is facing a battle of it's own as a new construction project by Oliver Homes gets underway, just twenty-five feet away. A representative for Oliver Homes says the land included in the project is not historically registered, and it is commercially zoned, so they have the right to start the project. In fact, the project has just started, and the representative said they expect construction to be complete. Shirley Palmer, who own the historic home near the project site, is worried that the storage shed project will ruin the rich historic value of the land, which was used as a tent hospital during the Civil War. She said, "I think we need to have little pockets of history, otherwise our children will never realize the importance of what happened here." Palmer has enlisted the help of a lawyer, who too is passionate about preserving the land. Jeff Hann said, "Our history is being erase and we have a perfect example right here where there was a field hospital at one time." Hann reccomends those who wish to express their concerns should write letters to Washington County's planning and zoning committee. |
