Reported by: Jacqueline Waite Sunday, Oct 4, 2009 @07:16pm EDT EMMITSBURG, MD - This weekend, families from across the country came to Maryland to honor family members who died in the line of duty as a firefighter.
The National Fallen Firefighters Memorial holds a service each year for those who died while serving their community. A total of 103 firefighters died last year from 36 states. Those who died in 2008 joined the more than 3,000 names already etched in stone at the site. Even though it was a somber reason for gathering, family members say the feeling of brotherhood triumphed. "I was in the military for 8.5 years, and we never had anything in the military like the brotherhood of firefighters," said Clarence Watson of Missouri, whose son died last November. There were two firefighters from Maryland honored at the memorial, Jarrett Dixon and Brian Neville. Both worked as firefighters in Baltimore County. |
