State and local leaders gathered at the Roxbury Correctional Institution to welcome a new warden. Gregg Hershberger has been with the Maryland Division of Corrections for nearly 30 years, most recently serving as the Assistant Warden at MCI. He is credited with starting several successful programs, including helping inmates find alternatives to violence. For three decades, former warden Nancy Rouse worked for positive changes while working for the Maryland Division of Corrections. Rouse became the first female prison warden in Western Maryland, but she wants to be recognized for her accomplishments rather than her gender. “It’s something that I’m proud of but I don’t really hang my hat on it because I’m first a warden, and then a woman,” she said. Rouse started her career as a clerical secretary and worked her way up from there. She served in leadership positions at all three prisons at the Hagerstown Department of Corrections Compound. |
