  • Local Students Fall Victim to People's Dirt Website
    Reported by: Nikki Burdine

    Wednesday, May 27, 2009 @12:15am EDT

FREDERICK, MD - These days bullying doesn’t just happen on the playground, what was once a childish game, has now turned serious and anonymous.

The newest outlet for cyber-bullies is a website called “Peoplesdirt.com " It's a nationwide site that is open to anyone to post anything, even if it's not true.  The website is divided up by states, counties, high schools and even colleges.  Several local high school students have already fallen victim to the site.  We caught up with one girl who was on the website; she says she wants to speak out about the dangers of cyber-bullying.

Alexis Shrank remembers when she first found out about the website.  "I started crying because it really did upset me at first.  I really just felt like someone had punched me in the face.  They said so many mean things.  I didn’t see any reason for it. I wasn’t sure what I did.  I didn’t know who it was either.  I had never been on that website before."

Alexis’ mother, Susan Cortes-Shrank, is just as concerned.  "She came down one evening in tears, and said mom there's this site that has some bad stuff about me on there."

"They say things and it’s hard to ignore it.  Because when you’re young you keep looking at it or people will tell you hey this is being said about you, and it gets to you, and it really does,” says Alexis.

Alexis’ high school says they address cyber-bullying in classes.  The school says if someone is being bullied, they should bring it to the attention of someone in school.

The website is currently under fire for making deceptive statements to obtain advertisers.  Maryland's attorney general says People’s Dirt represented itself to advertisers as a website suitable for persons ages six and older, and does not contain adult content.  The website has been shut down twice in the last five months.   Authorities have investigated it for possible criminal activity.  The majority of activity on the website has come from the state of Maryland.
