Reported by: Jackie Cutler Thursday, May 21, 2009 @07:08pm EDT JEFFERSON, MD - A local business that's been as familiar to local residents as the goods it sells, has been destroyed.
Although a big part of the building burned down, it's not a total loss. The Jefferson Market is an anchor for those who live in the town, but residents say a fire Wednesday night brought parts of the building down. The fire marshal has since deemed the building unsafe. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but employees say a stove was located right below the part of the roof that collapsed. The building was built in the 1940's. For the people in Jefferson it's one of the closest places for people to shop for everyday items. All that remains of the building is thousands of dollars in damage. No one was injured in the fire. The market made the news last fall when a man won $50,000 after buying a winning lottery ticket there. Photos provided by Lt. Kelly Lowery, Jefferson Volunteer Fire Company. |
