Reported by: Scott Hershberger Monday, Apr 20, 2009 @06:25pm EDT FULTON COUNTY, PA - The Iditarod dog sled race the most popular sporting event in Alaska.
It's been held in the state for more than 30 years, and a Fulton County teacher is preparing to attend next year's event, making it his second in a row.
Herb Brambley teaches environmental education at Southern Fulton Elementary School. He went to Alaska this winter after becoming a finalist for "Target's 2010 Iditarod Teacher on the Trail" competition. Much to Brambley's surprise, he won. He'll now be heading back to the Iditarod next year while sharing his experiences with his students back in Fulton County. "This trip is going to broaden their perspective of the cultures that exist on Earth and how people live and kind of open their minds to other cultures," Brambley said. During next year's Iditarod, Brambley will be flown from check point to check point, visiting a number of Alaska's schools. |
