  • Jon Hill, Walkersville, April 2009
    Reported by: Steve Rowings

    Wednesday, Apr 15, 2009 @07:00pm EDT

The female Student Athlete of the Month is Alyssa Collier, a senior at North Hagerstown High School.  A letter winner in volleyball, basketball, and softball, Alyssa has been named to multiple All-Piedmont Conference and All-County teams in her four years as a Lady Hub.

“Obviously you participate in athletics for your school, at your school, but at the same time you're going to want to keep up your grades because school's important just as much as sports are,” said Alyssa.

Off the field, Alyssa carries a 4.26 G.P.A.., is a member of the National Honor Society, and is the senior class president, all while holding down a part-time job.  After high school, Alyssa will attend Towson University and plans to continue her studies in the medical field.

“I'm leaning towards athletic sciences.  It's always been toward the medical field for me, but I'm not really sure,” said Alyssa.

The male Student Athlete of the Month is Jon Hill, a senior at Walkersville High School.  Jon competes in track and field for the Lions, where he's won 3 Maryland 2A state titles, and currently has the second best high jump in the nation this year, clearing 7’2” in an indoor meet.

“Academics always come first in my mind, so you have to excel in both that and your event, your sport,” said Jon.

Off the track, Jon maintains a 4.2 G.P.A. in A.P. and honors classes.  He recently signed a letter of intent to attend the University of Texas on a track and field scholarship, joining one of the best track programs in the country.

“When I decided I was going to Texas, I just felt like I can just concentrate on the rest of my school year, rest of my senior year, and try to jump on the rest of the season because I'm already signed, so I'll just try to have fun with it,” said Jon.

Congratulations to Alyssa Collier and Jon Hill, the NBC25 Student Athletes of the Month.
