  • Local Baseball Star Dies In CA Crash
    Reported by: Angelique Gonzalez

    Thursday, Apr 9, 2009 @07:20pm EDT

NBC25 - Williamsport High School graduate Nick Adenhart, a pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels, died early this morning in a car accident in Fullerton, California, according to a family member.

Three people were killed in the crash and another person was seriously injured.

Adenhart, 22, died around 6 a.m. in a California hospital, according to the  family member.

Adenhart pitched the best game of his professional career last night, going 6 scoreless innings against the Oakland Athletics.  He allowed 7 hits while striking out 5 in a no-decision as the Angels ended up losing the game.

Authorities are blaming the three-vehicle accident on a motorist in a mini-van who ran a red light at East Orangethorpe Avenue and South Lemon Street.

Authorities say the driver of the van fled the scene, was later captured and charged with felony hit-and-run.

A gray Mistubishi, hit by the van, slammed into a light pole.

Two of the occupants in the Mitsubishi were declared dead at the scene.

A fourth occupant is at UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange in critical condition.

A passenger from the van was taken to Western Medical Center in Anaheim with minor injuries.

The rookie made 3 starts for the Angels last year going 1-0 with an ERA of 9.

He was then re-assigned to AAA Salt Lake where he posted an ERA of over 7 this season.

He was expected to begin the year in AAA but had a strong spring and injuries to Angels Pitchers John Lackey, Ervin Santana and Kelvim Escobar opened up a spot for Adenhart to prove himself.

Adenhart made his major league debut on May 1, 2008 in a 15-8 loss to Oakland and lasted only two-plus innings.

He was tagged for five runs and three hits but didn't receive a decision.
