WASHINGTON COUNTY, MD - Firefighters have controlled a blaze that broke out at the Antietam Academy on South Hagerstown High School's Campus Monday morning. South High is located on South Potomac Street in Hagerstown, Maryland.
The Antietam Academy is an alternative education program housed in Building H on South Hagerstown High School's Campus.
Building H is not attached to the high school's main building.
Crews were first dispatched to the scene around 8:30 a.m.
When firefighters arrived at the scene they reported heavy smoke coming from Building H.
Around 50 students attend Antietam Academy.
None of the students were in the building at the time of the fire because of a two-hour weather delay for students in Washington County.
Maintenance crews were inside the building when the fire started, but no injuries were reported.
Fire officials believe the maintenance work may have contributed to the fire.
A spokesperson for Washington County Public Schools tells NBC25 that the fire has damaged the building so badly it will not be usable in the foreseeable future.
Students who attend the academy will now be relocated to classes inside South Hagerstown High School.
