Reported by: Jackie Cutler Thursday, Oct 2, 2008 @04:51pm EDT FREDERICK COUNTY, MD - Art and history are subject matters you typically find in a museum, but how about a museum dedicated to oppression?
At Mount Saint Mary's that's the type of museum a group of students have put together. Each exhibit in the museum highlights different forms of injustice whether it be racism, sexism or religious persecution. The museum isn't designed for observation only; organizers want museum-goers to interact. "We kind of have an Ellis Island-type setup where you come in and you sign in and your country of origin, so that at least in the beginning you stop and reflect,” described Sarah Furr, the director of intercultural development. “Even people who are a dominant identity might stop and reflect, ‘what is my country of origin?’ and ‘what would I write if I was coming to a new world and had to label myself?’"Sean Adams, the assistant dean of campus activities, added, "The important part of the room to me is the final part, which is the reflection area that we've set up, which is just mirrors for people with some questions on it. It gives folks a chance to think about what they've seen and what can they do personally." The museum ends Friday. For information on how you can check out the exhibits, click here. |
